UIDAI
UIDAI stands for the Unique Identification Authority of India, which is a government agency responsible for implementing and managing the Aadhaar system in India. Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number assigned to Indian residents based on their biometric and demographic data. The UIDAI was established in January 2009 and operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The main objective of the UIDAI is to provide a unique identity to every Indian resident and to enable digital authentication of their identity in a secure and reliable manner. The UIDAI also works towards developing and implementing policies, procedures, and standards for the Aadhaar system to ensure its integrity, confidentiality, and security.
Aadhaar is one of the largest biometric identification systems in the world, with over 1.2 billion registered users as of August 2021.
Aadhaar is linked to various government welfare schemes and programs, including subsidies, pensions, and social security benefits, to ensure efficient and transparent delivery of services to eligible beneficiaries.
The Aadhaar system uses biometric data, including fingerprints and iris scans, along with demographic information such as name, date of birth, and address, to create a unique identification number for each user.
The UIDAI has implemented various security measures to ensure the confidentiality and privacy of Aadhaar data, such as encryption and two-factor authentication.
In recent years, there has been some controversy around the use of Aadhaar for authentication purposes, with concerns raised about the potential for privacy violations and data breaches. The UIDAI has responded by introducing measures such as virtual IDs and limited KYC (know your customer) to address these concerns.
The UIDAI also provides various online services for Aadhaar users, such as checking the status of Aadhaar applications, updating demographic and biometric data, and downloading Aadhaar cards.

The Aadhaar system is also linked with the Permanent Account Number (PAN) issued by the Income Tax Department in India. Linking Aadhaar with PAN is mandatory for filing income tax returns in India.
The linking of Aadhaar with PAN aims to prevent tax evasion and duplication of PANs. It also helps to establish the identity of taxpayers and to simplify the process of filing income tax returns.
To link Aadhaar with PAN, individuals can visit the Income Tax Department's e-filing website and enter their PAN and Aadhaar details. The website will then verify the details and complete the linking process. It is important to ensure that the name, date of birth, and gender on both the Aadhaar card and PAN card match, as any discrepancy may cause the linking process to fail
Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act provides that every individual who has been allotted a Permanent Account Number (PAN) as on the 1st day of July, 2017, and who is eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number, shall intimate Aadhaar number in the prescribed form and manner. In other words, such persons have to mandatorily link their Aadhaar and PAN before the prescribed date (31.03.2022 without fee payment and 31.03.2023 with prescribed fee payment). For more details refer to CBDT Circular No.7/2022 dated 30.03.2022.
The government of India has made it mandatory to link Aadhaar with PAN for all taxpayers. This rule applies to both Indian residents and non-residents who earn income in India.
The deadline for linking Aadhaar with PAN has been extended several times in the past, and the current deadline is March 31, 2022. Failure to link Aadhaar with PAN by the deadline may result in a penalty or even the deactivation of the PAN.
The linking of Aadhaar with PAN also facilitates the processing of income tax refunds, as it enables the Income Tax Department to verify the authenticity of the taxpayer's details more efficiently.
The process of linking Aadhaar with PAN is straightforward and can be done online through the Income Tax Department's e-filing website. The website also provides an option to check the status of the linking process.
In case of any discrepancy between the details on the Aadhaar card and the PAN card, individuals can update their details on either of the cards and then initiate the linking process again.
It is also possible to link multiple PAN cards with a single Aadhaar number, provided that the details on all the PAN cards match with the details on the Aadhaar card. However, it is illegal to hold multiple PAN cards, and individuals are advised to surrender any duplicate PAN cards before linking Aadhaar with PAN.
